Tell me what you want…

One of my favourite Doobie Brothers songs (you can listen to it here) is 'Tell me what you want (and I'll give you what you need)'. Released in 1975, it's a classic, at least for those of us of a certain age.

The song contrasts wants and needs; whilst you need "cool and breezy winds blow sweetly at the edges of the garden", to experience them have to understand what you want. As the song says, "You're just reelin', takin' in the thoughts around you, Every one's got secrets you must find". If you discover what you need, life can become 'so easy, cool and breezy'.

It's a fairly simplistic view of the world, but it suggests that being able to articulate what you want is the first step to understanding what you need.

Coaching begins with identifying what you want, professionally and personally. It is easy to be dissatisfied with your job, to feel that it is going nowhere, while at the same time taking up too much of your personal and family time. It is hard to realise the 'easy, cool and breezy' when the work is 'hard, hot and stifling'.

A good coach will listen as you list the issues you face and begin to identify your goals. Through sensitive questioning and probing, the coach will highlight and clarify the important areas, so that you can discover what it is you are really looking for. The space to know your own mind is priceless in a busy world.

When you know what you want, finding what you need is a process of identifying the best of the available options, testing the barriers to achieving them, and formulating solutions to find the future you need.

As the Doobies say, 'time won't make you wait any longer'. Coaching can change your life. The first step is to book a free 30 minute conversation session here and together we can find out what you want, and what you need.
